Child Benefit (Kinderbijslag)

Child benefit is provided by the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB)

For Which Children Can You Receive Benefits?

  • your own child
  • a partner's or ex-partner's child
  • a foster child
  • a child you care for as your own

Benefit Amount

The benefit amount depends on the child's age and may be changed by government decision. For Q4 2024, the kinderbijslag amounts are:

| Age | Amount | | -------------- | ----------- | | 0 to 5 years | 281.69 euro | | 6 to 11 years | 342.05 euro | | 12 to 17 years | 402.41 euro |

Payment Frequency

Benefits are calculated per child per quarter and paid after each quarter ends. For example: your child was born on June 20, benefits start from Q3, and the first payment is transferred at the beginning of October. Special cases: If the child requires intensive care, you may apply for double benefits if the following criteria are met:

  • the child is 3 years or older
  • lives at home
  • has a recommendation from the Care Needs Assessment Centre (Centrum Indicatiestelling Zorg, CIZ)

Turning 16:

Continuation of benefits is linked to whether your child is in education; one of the following conditions must be met:

  • your child is in the process of obtaining a basic qualification (havo, vwo, or mbo level 2 or higher diplomas)
  • already has a basic qualification
  • cannot attend education due to illness or disability (has an exemption)

Turning 18:

Child benefit always stops. But your child may in certain cases receive other payments:

  • student financing from DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs - Education Executive Agency)
  • education allowance from DUO
  • care allowance (zorgtoeslag) from the Belastingdienst

Applying for Kinderbijslag

In some cases a letter from the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) arrives automatically, sometimes not, so you can check your personal situation after completing the questionnaire on the website.
